Reality is such a buzz kill

It's very easy to get caught up in the excitement of moving across the country for a little bit. That is until, you inquire about registering your car - among other things.

"Hey, there's one thing that's cheaper in Oregon," I said optimistically.

"It's only 54 bucks to register your car and that is good for two years!" I said.

The optimism lasted for about two seconds. Literally. Until I read the second line. I won't bore you with the details, but I will just say that it includes having to send a PACKET to my bank (who owns my car until I pay it off) for them to fill out along with sending the title to the DMV. The process will literally take a month.

So, along with beautiful waterfalls and mountains and unicorns (Scott) - there's the DMV, water and sewer bills, state income taxes and a whole slew of things that we've never had to deal with.

We're getting there. As soon as we can get all of this reality bs out of the way, there will be fun to be had in this magical place they call Oregon.

the bureaucracy (I had to go to spell check for that one)that exists outside of the state of nh is unbelievable. pa taxes include:
* pa state income tax
* local income tax
* local emergency tax - $52
* occupational privilege tax - $10
* occupation tax - based on job title (100s of dollars each year)
* property tax
* state sales tax
* unemployment tax
vehicle registration every year
i hope oregon isn't as bad as pa when it comes to taxes

It seems as though states love to nickle and dime you. Hopefully you don't find any more surprises. I hope packing is going well... not a fun task....EVER!!!! Take care and keep on checking out those rocking pics you posted... it will be all worth it in the end.

I'm pretty sure Oregon has a lot of cool stuff that New Hampshire doesn't have. Come on. Start making a list. It's not going to be as boring as taxes and car titles.

Actually I feel the need to defend NH. There are amazing things here that aren't in other states like the seacoast, the White Mountains, beautiful lakes and other vacation places, Fritz Weatherbee, Lynn Warner, Bow Lake, rapid running kayaking rivers, Betty Warner, golf courses, snowshoe trails, hiking for hikers of all ages and skills, the Scott Rowe family, and Molly Warner to name a few.
Oh, right, and the channel 9 news.
But, Amy, you will love your time in Oregon -- who knows you may actually love it enough to stay...
you'll probably get all the stuff settled for Oregon and the two years you've planned to be out there will just have one more month to go and it will be time to do it all over again when you and Adam come back to NH!

that is for the privilege of working. we have to pay ten bucks every year. makes me want to retire.
